MIS Middle School Soccer Team Update:

We finished another solid week of soccer yesterday at Lolo, winning the game 2-0. We also beat Hellgate 8-1 on Wednesday bringing our season record to 4-0-1, 4 wins, 0 losses and 1 tie. Our next game is Monday 10/8 against Hellgate at the Duncan Field, 4:00-5:00. We also have one more game next week on Wednesday, 10/10 against Frenchtown. This game is also at the Duncan Field and is also from 4:00-5:00.  The game on Wednesday is our final “home game” of the season. The remaining three games consist of one game at Target Range on Monday 10/15. The following week we have two games against Sussex School at Fort Missoula on Wednesday 10/17.

Teacher Feature:  Christian Baker

There are a few aspects of teaching PE at MIS that I love. First, it’s the students and how they respond to the curriculum. I love teaching in the IB, and seeing the students thrive in the variety of learning environments we aim to create. I love how we meet each student where they are, in order to help them reach their goals as learners and our goals as educators. While we do spend time on traditional sports such as basketball, soccer and hockey, we also focus on broader conceptual understanding, to allow transfer to take place between their other subjects and PE. Finally, I really appreciate our aim to maintain smaller classes to allow for more individualized teaching and learning. This also allows specialist teachers to have more time with each individual student thus providing an opportunity to get to know our students even better.
In high school, I played football, basketball, baseball and ran track. I played intramural basketball, soccer and flag football in college. Today, I play basketball and rock climb pretty regularly. I also coach the Missoula youth climbing team, The Gnar Pirates, which was born from a desire to continue to give back to a community I feel life has given so much to me. Climbing is for me what I imagine Yoga or meditation is for many others. When I’m able to climb regularly, I feel more balanced in life. It is for this reason I want to share this balance and love for climbing with others. A motto I live by is “To be great at anything you have to love the process to get there.”
