During our most recent assembly, Sergio and Lucia shared a beautiful and comprehensive presentation about their families and home in Spain and had the gym singing and dancing to a silly song. View their presentation here and learn more about our amazing Amity Interns in the following interview!

The Amity Intern Teaching Program is an international nonprofit organization that pairs volunteer teaching assistants with US schools. In addition to serving in schools, interns are also assigned host families to cut down on living expenses and further broaden the cultural experience for everyone involved.

This year, we are lucky to have Sergio and Lucia enrich the MIS community with their experience and enthusiasm. Sergio comes to MIS from Soria, Spain, the smallest city in the country. He is working on his degree in Education from the University of Valladolid. Lucia is from Palencia, Spain where she studies Early Childhood Education.

Where is your favorite place you’ve traveled?

Sergio – My two favorite places are London because of British history and the Mediterranean Spanish coast because it’s relaxing, beautiful beaches.

Lucia – My favorite place is London, too. I went there last christmas with some friends and I really enjoy the experience. It’s a beautiful place!

What is your favorite thing to do with your family?

Sergio – My brother and I love listening to music, going to the movies, and exploring together. My mom and I enjoy just hanging out, taking walks, shopping, and relaxing together. My dad and I enjoy traveling to sports games, especially soccer. We enjoy watching the games together.

Lucia – I enjoy spending time together while watching films or traveling to new places in Spain.

What are you most excited about this school year?

Sergio – I am learning so many new things and excited for people to learn from me, also! I am curious about the differences between Spanish and American education and hope to share these new experiences.

Lucia – I want to learn a lot about the work in this school. MIS is the first IB school I am working in and I am interested in that teaching model.

How do you encourage students to be open minded?

Sergio – Breaking the routine! Not just doing the same activities every day but change it up by showing them videos, news about the world… engaging them in a cultural exchange!

Lucia – I help students to learn about the world, new languages, and different people.

Any other fun facts about you that you’d like to share?

Sergio- I love EDM music and over the summer I am a DJ! Also, soccer is my life. I love playing and coaching. When I have free time, I love going to watch kids games in my city or go to spanish cities to watch La Liga games.

Lucia – I love animals and I have a bunny named “Lennon” because the Beatles is my favorite band!
