Meet the Amity Interns!
Lucia Verduguez

I sat down with Lucia, who is from Toledo, to learn more about how she is spending her time here in Montana and how it compares to her home.

J: Tell me a little about your family and where you grew up? What do you like to do in your free time?

L: I grew up in a small town in Toledo, where my family lives. I have two brothers, both are smaller than me. I moved to Madrid to study teaching when I was 17 years old. In my spare time, I love cooking, especially I like to cook for my family.

J:  What is something that you are looking forward to trying or seeing while in Montana?

L: While I am in Montana, I would love to learn how to ski, go fishing and travel as much as possible, because I like to travel and discover new countries.

J: Why did you decide to apply to the Amity Institute and come to Montana?

L: I decided to apply to the Amity Institute because I love teaching and wanted to live a new experience in a new country and especially improve my English.

J:  What are some of the new foods that you have tried since arriving in the states?

L: I have eaten for the first time tomato soup, raisin biscuits and hot dogs (I have never eaten hot dogs in Spain), but I want to try many more meals!

Bélen Aguirre

I sat down with Bélen, who is from Madrid, to learn more about how she is spending her time here in Montana and how it compares to her home.

J: Tell me a little about your family and where you grew up?

B: My family is the most important thing I have in my life. I have two brothers and one sister. My parents are my role models and the most important persons for me. Most of what I’ve learned from them, and I’m like I am because of how they are. I grew up in a house in Madrid, in Pozuelo specifically. My house is located on the outside of Madrid, with a lot of nature and little pollution. In my house, I’ve always been happy. I’ve had a very happy childhood, full of friends and a wonderful family. I’m very lucky to have lived there and to have the family I have.

J:  What is something that you are looking forward to trying or seeing while in Montana?

B: While I am in Montana, I would like to know and do many things. first of all, I hope to learn and enjoy a lot during my stay here. Also, I would like to learn the American school methodology. There are many activities that I would like to do while I am here, many of them I think I will be able to do with my host family, like for example travel to wonderful places, taste different food, learn English in depth, etc. Also, I hope to grow in all senses during this time and help the students with everything they need.

J:  What do you like to do in your free time?

B:  In my free time I like to do sports (swimming, playing tennis, cycling, skating), take walks in the mountains, hunt in hunting season, read, listen to music, try different cuisines …

J: Why did you decide to apply to the Amity Institute and come to Montana?

B: I decided to apply to amity because I thought it was a perfect opportunity for me right now. I just finished my degree and it’s the first year that I already work as a teacher in real life and not just as a trainee teacher. I think its different as working in my teacher trainer internship. Going out to work is an experience that is going to teach me many things and above all, it is going to make me have a more open mind and improve in many personal aspects. Also, as a professional training, I think it is very enriching to get to know another different methodology and learn the different ways of teaching that can be found with children. The more you know the better you work. I thought that going out to work a year out would help me in many aspects of my life, not only professional but also personal.

J:  What are some of the new foods that you have tried since arriving in the states?

B: Since I have come to Missoula, Montana the best I have tried are some cookies that make a nice schoolmate. I took them for my birthday and they were great. I really like sweet, and in Montana, I have tried many sweet foods that I have loved, such as the cakes and cookies they make in my host family. In addition, I have tried many things that I can’t remember, but one of them is a sandwich that is known as BLT and corns.
