The MIS Experience

Spanish Immersion

Spanish immersion means that Spanish is the only language spoken in the classroom, creating an “immersion environment.” The main benefits for anyone participating in immersion environment include: academic, cognitive, creative, and social development and fluency.

Language immersion strengthens the brain, improves understanding of native language, and gives students an advantage later in life because globalization increasingly demands a workforce that is fluent in diverse languages.

Experiential, Inquiry Based Learning

MIS classes are organized in a multiage framework that combines two or three age groups in the same class. This framework allows for collaboration and learning in a variety of ways. Older students benefit from the qualities of leadership and responsibility they develop while younger students benefit from the mentorship and modeling provided by their older peers.

Multiage education provides an authentic learning environment where individual needs can be met and a student-centered educational experience.

Global Focus & International Curriculum

The PYP is an educational framework founded on a philosophy that recognizes a child’s natural curiosity, creativity and ability to reflect. The PYP generates a stimulating, challenging learning environment to nurture those assets and foster a lifelong love of learning. It promotes integrated, inquiry-based learning through units of inquiry that comprise the core curricular content.

The Pillars of MIS

MIS Initiatives

Science Technology Engineering Arts Math (STEAM)

The integrated approach to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math complements the inquiry based learning of the IB curriculum.

Students in kindergarten learn basic programming and collaboration through Lego® Robotics and Scratch.

In second grade, students have a separate technology and design class while also making use of laptops, iPads and Chromebooks for research and project-based learning.

Students at all grades learn about simple circuitry using our Little Bits™ kits.

Students participate in the design process to create projects printed on 3D printers. MIS also offers after school enrichment programs in robotics, art, MathCounts, and First Lego® League.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Schools are recognizing the importance of supporting development of students’ self-awareness and self-management skills essential to success in school and in life.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) coaches join school counselors here at MIS to help students develop social awareness and interpersonal skills. The hope is to establish and maintain positive relationships as well as teach ethical decision-making skills and responsible behaviors in all contexts.
